CLASS OF 1933 NOVEMBER 15, 1914 - JULY 24, 1959 Wendell Leroy Russell, 44, Osawatomie, died July 24, 1959, in the Veterans hospital, Kansas City. The youngest child of Clarence S. and Ella Russell, he was born on a farm in Vernon County, Mo., November 15, 1914, and moved to Osawatomie with his parents at the age of four years. He graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1933. He was a member of the Kansas 14th Cavalry from March 15, 1937 to December 5, 1939. He enlisted in the U. S. Army November 18, 1940 and was sent to Camp Robinson with the 127th field artillery band. He went to California with the 35th and later was transferred to Camp Carson, Colo., with the 40th engineers band. He was honorably discharged because of illness March 28, 1943. Mr. Russell is survived by three sisters, Mrs. John Cahman, Paola, Mrs. J. D. Moon, Lane and Mrs. M. T. Everett, Osawatomie, and one brother, D. G. Steve of Kansas City. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Osawatomie Presbyterian Church with Rev. Howard Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Osawatomie cemetery under the direction of the Eddy Funeral Home. |
