JUNE 23, 1914 - NOVEMBER 21, 1949

Edward Earl Read, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Read, was born June 23, 1914 at Alice, Iowa, and passed away while enroute to the St. Mary's hospital in Kansas City, Mo., Monday, November 21, 1949 at the age of 35 years, 4 months, and 28 days.

He came to Kansas with his parents the summer of 1926. He attended the public school in Osawatomie and graduated from the high school in 1933. He was married in Los Angeles, Calif., in December, 1937 to Dorothy Lila Crowe. To this union two children were born: Gary Earl Read and Janet Sue Read. They moved back to Kansas in 1945 and have resided here since that time.

He was an employee of the MIssouri Pacific Railroad and belonged to the Elks Lodge No. 921, Rebekah No. 336, Odd Fellow No. 349 and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Survivors are his wife, his two children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Read of Osawatomie; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Crouch, Leavenworth, Kansas, Mrs. Maggie Bacon, Paola, Kansas, and Mrs Florence Hollis, Osawatomie, Kansas; a brother, Thomas H. Read, Osawatomie; several neices and nephews, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church, Friday, November 25, 1949 at 2 p.m. Rev. J. W. JacLean, pastor of the Osawatomie Presbyterian church officiating. Mrs. Esther Teeter and Mrs. Gertrude Price, accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Eleanor Beasley, sang "Sun Rise Tomorrow" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."

The pallbearers were Gene Wilson, M. C. Crouse, James Whitney, Clark Myers, L. B. Johnson, and Everett Whitney. The flower bearers were Mrs. Carl Kester, Mrs. Clark Myers, Mrs. James Whitney, Mrs. Clare Peterson, Mrs. L. B. Johnson and Mrs. M. C. Crouse. Interment was in the Osawatomie cemetery. I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 349 had charge of graveside service under direction of the Birchard Funeral Home.

Those from out of town attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Crouch of Leavenworth; Mrs. and Mrs. Ronald Joy of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Bacon, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Donoan and Mrs. Ada Crowe o Paola; William Daughtery of Kinsley, Kas; Mr. and Mrs. James Mahin, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Griffin and Mrs. C. E. Saller of Kansas City, Mo.
