WALTER JOHNSON

CLASS OF 1933

JANUARY 8, 1916 - JANUARY 15, 1997

Walter Beck Johnson was born in Osawatomie Kansas - the son of Lewis M. and Cordie Alice Beck Johnson - on January 8, 1916.  He died January 15, 1997 in Blue Island, Illinois.

Walter was the next to last child born in his family of eleven.  He and others attended Osawatomie schools but Walter was only one of four of the children who graduated from Osawatomie High School.  Ellis Johnson graduated in 1925; Ruth Johnson Borden graduated in 1931; Walter Johnson graduated in 1933; and Edgar Johnson graduated in 1938.

Walter and Lavern Nelson from Minnesota were married in Osawatomie on May 28, 1938.  They were blessed with two sons - Edward Lewis in 1939 and Walter Arthur in 1940.  Lavern preceded him in death on June 21, 1985 in Midlothian, Illinois.  Others preceding him in death included his parents, his brothers, Lester, George, Amos, Vernon, Ellis; and his sisters, Maud, Amy, Alice, and Ruth.

Walter started his railroad career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Osawatomie.  He worked with his father and brothers, Lester George, Amos Vernon, Ellis, and Edgar.  He later worked at many locations for the Rock Island Railroad and was employed in Chicago, Illinois where he retired.
