DECEMBER 16, 1914 - AUGUST 14, 1989

Velma Marie Vaughn, 74, Osawatomie, longtime area resident, died Monday, Aug. 14, 1989, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Osawatomie.

She was born Dec. 16, 1914, in Beagle, Kan., the daughter of Ralph L. and Edith Lenora Rookstool Grant. She grew up in Beagle and went to the Beagle Country School. She graduated from the Osawatomie High School in the Class of 1932. For a few years she worked for Reed's Variety Store in Osawatomie.

She was married in Osawatomie on June 30, 1935, to Clarence Paul Vaughn. They made their home in Osawatomie. They moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1936. Mrs. Vaughn worked for the Simmons Mattress Co. in Fairfax for several years as purchasing agent.

During World War II, she worked for the Bendix Corporation, Kansas City Division. In 1945 she began working for the Schermerhorn Twine Co. in Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Vaughn worked there 29 years and in 1974 retired as office manager and returned to Osawatomie. Mr. Vaughn died Oct. 6, 1987.

Mrs. Vaughn was a member of the Auxiliary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 921 of Osawatomie and the Osawatomie Women's Golf Association.

Her parents also preceded her in death.

Two sisters survive, May Sheehan of Osawatomie, and Mildred Huckshorn of Belton, Mo.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Osawatomie Cemetery under the direction of the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie. Thr Rev. William Pingry officiated.
