RUTH JOHNSON BORDEN BRYANT

CLASS OF 1931

AUGUST 6, 1912 - FEBRUARY 23, 1986

Final rites for Ruth N. Bryant, 405 Carr Ave., were held last Wednesday. Mrs. Bryant, a lifelong Osawatomie resident, died Feb. 23, 1986, in St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. She was 73.

Born Aug. 6, 1912 in Osawatomie, she was a daughter of Lewis M. and Cordie Alice Beck Johnson. She attended local schools, graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1931.

In 1932, she was married to Irvan R. "John" Borden. They were parents of one son. Mr. Borden died Aug. 5, 1958.

In July 1961, she was married to McCurdy L. "Mac" Bryant. He died in 1971.

Mrs. Bryant worked as an operator in the Osawatomie Telephone Office for many years until the operation went to the dial system. After working at the Miami County Courthouse for a short time, Mrs. Bryant began working as a telephone operator at Osawatomie State Hospital. She retired from that post in 1977.

Mrs. Bryant was a member of the First Christian Church, the Teamworkers Class and Harmony Extension Homemakers Unit.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include her son, Raymond Borden, Overland Park; a step-son, Robert Bryant, Wichita; two brothers, Walter Johnson of Midlothain, Ill. and Edgar Johnson of Ottawa; a sister, Amy Bridwell of Jasonville, Ind.; seven granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Ruth Ann Kottwitz and the Rev. Forrest Haggard officiated at services in Eddy-Birchard Chapel. Music was provided by Nelle Dollar at the organ with Josephine Dickey and Jean Smith as vocalists. Pallbearers were J. Lucius Bush, J. G.Shelden, Glenn Kester, Clayton Hartford, Richard Bridges and Jim Burton. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the First Christian Church of Osawatomie and the Overland Park Christian Church.
