CLASS OF 1931
Gladys Helen Sullivan, 85, a Miami County native, died Saturday Oct. 18 1997, at Lake Forest Nursing Center in Lake Forest, Calif. She was born Nov. 19, 1911, at Beagle, the daughter of Guy and Allita Blanche Cavinee Grant. She attended grade school at Mount Creek School and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1931. She was married to John William “Bill” Sullivan on March 1, 1938, at Ottawa. They became the parents of a son. They moved to Osawatomie in 1951. Her husband died Nov. 1, 1987. In her earlier years, Mrs. Sullivan worked as an extra at the telephone office in Beagle. She worked at Osawatomie State Hospital for nearly two years and later went back to work at the hospital from 1951 until 1973, when she had to quit due to poor health. She was a psychiatric aide. She was a member of the Beagle United Methodist Church. Her parents and a brother also preceded her in death. Her son, Richard E. Sullivan of Mission Viejo, Calif., and two grandchildren survive. Services were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. The Rev. Lee Wiersma officiated. Musical selections were “Ave Maria”, “Rock of Ages” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.” Burial was in the Beagle Cemetery. Pallbearers were John David Cole, Gail Chambers, Merle Stone, John Slayman, Glenn Kester and Ernest Swenson. Memorials have been established in her name to the American Heart Association.
