Louise Whitla Cheatham, 98, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on July 4, 2010.

Louise was born Mabel Louise Whitla in Kansas July 24, 1911, to John V. and Liddie Whitla. She graduated from Osawatomie High School with the class of 1929 and the College of Emporia in 1933.

Prior to retirement, she was an admission counselor for the University of California Berkley.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Stanley Johnson and Dick Judy, brothers Ralph and Raymond Whitla, and sister Marjorie Van Antwerp. She is survived by husband William Cheatham, sister Dorothy Palmer, four nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM July 21, 2010 at Westminster Village, 12000 N. 90th St., Scottsdale. Arrangements are being handled by The Neptune Society.

 

Louise was born in Edgerton, Kansas on July 24, 1911, the third of five children. She was born Mabel Louise Whitla, but was called Louise her entire life. Later she moved to Osawatomie, Kansas. In 1929 she graduated from Osawatomie High School where she was a member of the Glee Club and Pep Club! In 1933 she graduated from the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas with a degree in English. For the next ten years she worked in Kansas City helped her younger sister go to College. In 1943, she moved to San Francisco, California where she worked a while for an insurance cormpany. While living in San Francisco she met her first husband Stanley Johnson. Louise and Stanley were married in 1945 and for many years she helped manage his electrical equipment company. After Stanley's death in 1961, Louise went to work for the California State Employment Office and then later worked as an admissions counselor for the University of California at Berkley and eventually retred from there. She married Dick Judy in 1973 and they moved to Santa Rosa, California. Dick died nine years later in 1982. Later Louise became reacquainted with a classmate named Bill Cheatham whose wife had also died. Bill and Louise were married in March 1994, and they made their home in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2003 Louise and Bill moved to Westminster Village. Louise loved to travel and traveled extensively during her life. She also loved to sew and read and had a Great Books collection. Before her death on July 4th, 2010, Louise had the distinction of being the oldest living person of the Whitla family. Louise had no children and is survived by her husband, Bill, her sister Dorothy Palmer of Santa Ana, California, four nieces and two nephews.
