Walter Ellis Barnes, 87, a native of Osawatomie, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at his home in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He was born Aug. 27, 1911, at Osawatomie, the second of three children of Walter and Cora Edna McWilliams Barnes. He grew up in Osawatomie and attended the Osawatomie schools, graduating from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1929. He then attended the University of Kansas for two and one-half years.

He went to work in the oil fields at Fittstown, Okla., in 1933 for E.H. Moore Oil Co. He then was superintendent for Plains Exploration Co. in Zenith, Kan.

He was married to Helen Louise Hayden on May 16, 1941, at Larned, Kan. They made their home in Stafford, Kan.

Mr. Barnes served during World War II, entering the U.S.Air Force on June 9, 1942. He was stationed in England with the 360th Bomb Squad for three and one-half years. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 5, 1945, having held the rank of staff sergeant.

Upon his discharge, he went to work for National Supply in Stafford. He and his wife moved to Elk City, Kan., in 1949, to Tulsa, Okla. in 1953, and to Amarillo, Texas, in 1960. They moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., in 196, to Denver, Colo. in 1962, and back to Oklahoma City in 1963.

The couple spent a lot of time traveling since 1970, spending only about three months of the year in Oklahoma City. They traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and many countries in Europe and Africa. They spent winters in Venture Out Resort of Cujoe Key, Fla. One of their favorite hobbies was fishing.

Mr. Barnes was a member of the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, the American Petroleum Institute, the Independent Oil and Gas Association and the Moose Lodge in Big Pine Key, Fla. He was a former member of the American Legion and Petroleum Club of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was a lifetime member of the Wally Bynum Caravan Club International and was a lifetime member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity in Lawrence.

His parents and a sister, Virginia Kimberlin, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Barnes of the home; a sister, Marcella B. Davis of Salem, Ore.; and nieces and nephews.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osaatomie. The Rev. Larry Buss officiated. Roland Wayne "Jim" Hayden and the Rev. Lorena Hunt gave eulogies. Ruth Elliott sang "He Touched Me' and "On Eagles Wings," accompanied at the organ by Julie Weaver.

Military services were conducted at graveside by a military unit from Fort Riley. Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery.
