VELMA WEBER HUDDLESTON

NOVEMBER 10, 1910 - JUNE 16, 2006

Velma Weber Huddleston, 95, an Osawatomie native, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Parker Hill House, a care facility in Santa Rosa, Calif.

The daughter of William Henry and Margaret Rohrer Weber, she was the second of their five children and was born in Osawatomie on Nov. 10, 1910. Her father founded the American State Bank in 1923.

She graduated in 1928 from Osawatomie High School. She then attended the University of Kansas and did graduate work at Columbia University in New York City. A music teacher, she taught in Topeka.

She and Donald Huddleston were married in 1943 and lived in Kansas for several years before moving to California. They settled in Newport Beach, where they raised their two daughters. Following her husband's death, she moved to Santa Rosa to be near her daughters.

Mrs. Huddleston was a member of Children's Home Society, Parent-Teacher Organization and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon.

She enjoyed playing bridge. The last years of her life were enriched by the love and companionship of the residents, staff and owners of Parker Hill House. Her strength of character and love of life allowed her a long and satisfying life.

She was an inspiration to all who knew her and was known for her "million dollar smile." Her last words were "thanks for everything."

Others preceding her in death were a daughter, Peggy Fillmon; a sister, Nadine Weber Schwartz; and three brothers, Alden Weber, Leland Weber and Wayne Weber.

Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Grimm of Santa Ross, and three grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be Aug. 5 at her daughter's home.
