DECEMBER 10, 1908 - OCTOBER 29, 1994

Earl W. Shoemaker, 85, Bozeman, Mont., formerly of Osawatomie, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 1994, at Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman.

He was born Dec. 10, 1908, at Independence, Mo., to John V. and Pansy DeBerry Shoemaker. He was the oldest of seven children. The family moved to Beagle when he was a young boy and he was baptized into the Reformed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The family then moved to a farm near Osawatomie.

He attended school at Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School with the class of 1928. After high school, he went to Sweeney's Automobile School in Kansas City, Mo., where he received a mechanics certificate.

He married Nellie Homrighausen on Dec. 24, 1929, in Osawatomie. They moved to Escalante, Utah, where he worked as a mechanic in his uncle's station. They lived in Fillmore, Utah, for a short time before moving to Topeka, where he owned and operated a Texaco service station for 15 years. He received many awards from Texaco for outstanding service.

Mr. Shoemaker then built and operated the Nod Away Motel and remained in that endeavor until his retirement in 1974. He then became a member of the Presbyterian Church. He and his wife moved to Bozeman in 1990.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Preceding him in death were his parents and four brothers, Hugh Shoemaker, John Shoemaker, Leo Shoemaker and Bill Shoemaker.

Those surviving are his wife, Nellie Shoemaker of the home; two daughters, Betty Delk of Huntsville, Ala., and Bonnie Landerdahl of Bozeman, Mont.; a brother, Clifford Shoemaker of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Young of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be a 2 p.m. Thursday at the Osawatomie Cemetry under the direction of the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie. The Rev. Leslie Murphy will officiate.

Memorials may be made in his name to the First Presbyterian Church, 2626 West Babcock, Bozeman, MT 59715.
