Graveside services for James Clarence Powell, 1625 Main St., Osawatomie, were held Thursday in Elmdale Cemetery.

Mr. Powell, a longtime Osawatomie resident, died Monday, March 23, 1992, in his home at the age of 81.

He was born Aug. 25, 1910, in Holliday and his parents were James Joseph and Katie Norris Powell. When he was four, his mother died and he was raised by his sister, Ester Teeter, and her husband, Lynn Teeter, in Osawatomie.

After graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1928, he attended Baker University in Baldwin City for two years.

In the 1930s, be began a career with the United States Postal Service that was to end with his retirement in 1971. His career was interrupted during World War II when he served with the United States Navy.

He married Marjorie Fitzgerald and they became the parents of a son, Craig. Their marriage ended in divorce.

He and Gertrude Allard Nichols were married June 18, 1973, in Miami, Okla.

Among those preceding him in death were two sisters, Gertrude Price and Mrs. Teeter.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude, of the home; his son, Craig S. Powell, Osawatomie; two stepdaughters, Diane Vincent Merry, Wichita, and Connie Sheehan, Osawatomie; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Don Parnell officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established in his name to the Center for Basic Cancer Research.
