ALDEN O. WEBER

CLASS OF 1927

 JULY 15, 1909 - OCTOBER 1980

Alden O. Weber, one of Osawatomie's longtime civic leaders and businessmen, died at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS after a brief illness. He was 71.

He was born July 15, 1909 near Abilene, the oldest of five children, to William and Margaret Rohrer Weber. He received his elementary and secondary schooling in Ottawa and Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1927.

Mr. Weber graduated from the University of Kansas and received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cornell University in 1936. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Society of the Sigma Xi and the recipient of other academic honors. During the years of his graduate studies and the years following, he contributed to various learned journals. He taught philosophy at Cornell University for two years.

In 1941, he joined the American State Bank founded by his father. He succeeded his father as managing officer of the bank in 1947.

Mr. Weber was married on April 7, 1945 in Osawatomie to Adelaide Chamberlin. They recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and held several officers in civic organizations including the presidency of the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Osawatomie Historical Society. He was on the board of directors of the Miami County Hospital for 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dr. Leland Weber. Survivors include his wife, Adelaide of the home; one brother, Wayne Weber of Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Mrs. Nadine Schwartz of Paola, and Mrs. Velma Huddleston of Newport Beach CA; two stepsons, Nick Chamberlin of Osawatomie, and Don Chamberlin of Albuquerque, NM and three grandsons.

The Rev. Eugene Riley and the Rev. Clayton Pittman officiated at the services. Music was provided by Mrs. Ida Phares at the organ.

Honorary pallbearers were Archie Parks, K. R. Johnson, Dr. W. O. Appenfeller, and Mike Schwartz. Active pallbearers were Ted Barrett, Nick Chamberlin, Don Chamberlin, Steven Chamberlin, Nick Chamberlin, Jr., and Craig Chamberlin. Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery. A memorial in his name was established to the Kansas Society for Crippled Children.
