Services for R. Ellis Johnson of Scottsdale, Ariz., were held Monday in Eddy Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson, 64, died last Wednesday, June 12, 1974, in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital.

Born in Osawatomie, he began a railroad career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1925 following his graduation from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1925. He joined the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1936 and served as secretary to the general manager; assistant general manager; assistant vice-president of operations; and as executive vice-president from 1954 to 1961.

He was elected president of the lines in 1961 and served in this position until his retirement in 1965. He had lived in Scottsdale since 1970.

Mr. Johnson had also served as director of the Kansas City Terminal Railway Co., the Waterloo Railway Co., the Railway Express Agency Directors Assn. of American Railroads and the American Railway Engineers Assn.

He was a member of the Hiram Club of Scottsdale and belonged to the United Methodist Church of LaGrange, Ill. He had been a member of the DeMolay Legion of Honor, the Union League and Western Railway Executives.

Mr. Johnson was the recipient of the Horatio Alger Award.

Survivors include the widow, Julia, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Garden, Hutchinson, and Mrs. George Miner, Bristol, Wis.; five brothers, George Johnson and Vernon Johnson, Osawatomie, Amos Johnson, Sikeston, Mo., Walter Johnson, Chicago, Ill., and Edgar Johnson, Paola; three sisters, Mrs. Maude Masters, Heber Springs, Ark., Mrs. Amy Bridwell, Jasonville, Ind., and Mrs. Ruth Bryant, Osawatomie; and five grandchildren.

The Rev. Clayton Pittman officiated at the services. Music was provided by Mrs. John Dollar, organist. Pallbearers were Raymond Laird, Douglas Hagadorn, Bethel Perry, Joseph Whiteford, James Powell and Harry Stoner. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery with Masonic services at the graveside.
