Roberts Edwin Day, 88, formerly of Osawatomie, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1995, at his home in Chicago, Ill.

He was born in Dewey, Okla., on Aug. 30, 1907, the son of Edwin and Caddie Roberts Day.  The family moved
to Osawatomie when he was just a few months old.  He attended grade school in Osawatomie and the Mound Valley
Public School located 5 miles north of Osawatomie.  He graduated from Meeks Grade School at Osawatomie
and Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1925.

He was married to Veda Almyra Dickerson on Oct. 24, 1930, at Ottawa.  They made their home in Osawatomie.
They became the parents of a daughter.

Mr. Day worked from 1925 to 1927 at the American State Bank in Osawatomie.  He then went to work for the
Missouri Pacific Railroad in Osawatomie and worked there for 10 years before joining the Rock Island Railroad
in Kansas City, Mo. He worked for the railroad in Chicago, Ill. from 1940 to 1942.

He entered the United States Army in June 1942 and served during World War II.  He was appointed second lieutenant and left for
overseas Oct. 5, 1942.  He served at Headquarters Africa Middle East Theater in Cairo, Egypt and Suez, Egypt.

He was on terminal leave from November 1945 until Feruary 1946 and joined the Army Reserves at that time.  He held various
positions at CRI&P from February 1946 through 1961.  He was called to active duty with the 322nd Logistical Command in
October 1961 in connection with the Berlin call-up.  He was stationed in Ft. Lee, Va., and served there until August 1962.

He was then assigned to the 425th Transportation Command in Chicago, Ill., in January 1965.  He retired from the Army
in August 1967.  Between 1962 and 1973, he was assistant auditor, assistant to tax auditor and manager of miscellaneous
taxes with the CRI&P in Chicago.

Mr. Day began with the account reconcilment services of the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago in January 1974.
He retired from there in October 1991.

He was a member of the Osawatomie Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago, Medinah Temple, Chicago Chapter
of Sojourners, Southwest Side Shrine Club, Chicago South Elks Lodge, Beverly Hills Post No. 407 of the American Legion,
Reserve Officers Association and the Morgan Park Methodist Church.

Preceding him death were his parents, a brother, Ab Day, and two sisters, Alta Durrant and Loree VanPelt.

Surviving are his wife, Veda Day of the home; his daughter, JoAnn Wack of Biloxi, Miss.; three grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.

Services were at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Zimmerman & Sandeman Memorial Chapel in Chicago, Ill. Services were
at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.  The Rev. Lee Wiersman officiated.
I.H. McMahon sang "Going Home" and "How Great Thou Art," accompanied on the organ by Rosalie Bowker.

Masonic services were conducted by Osage Valley Lodge No. 24 AF&AM.  Merle Stone was orator and Glenn
Ricketts recited the prayer.

Burial was in the Osawaatomie Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Masons: Merle Stone, Kenneth Crouch, Jay Sheldon,
Carl Wittenbrink, Gene Brownback and Everett Reeder.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.
