OCTOBER 26, 1906 - MARCH 3, 1997

Emma Corrinne Stewart, 90, longtime Osawatomie resident, died Monday, March 3, 1997, at Heritage Manor nursing center in Osawatomie.

Corrinne, as she was known, was born Oct. 26, 1906, in Osawatomie, the daughter of George W. and Jennie Morrison Vermillion. She attended school in Osawatomie, graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1924.

After graduating, she went to the former Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg and received a life certificate to teach. She began teaching in the rural schools of Miami County and later she was hireed to teach in the Osawatomie school system, remaining there for several years.

She was married June 8, 1932, to Ivy Eugene Stewart, a physician, at her parents' home in Osawatomie. He died November 1961.

Mrs. Stewart was an active member of the community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in the WSCS. She was a past president of the WMB Sunday school class. She taught Sunday school classes and was pianist for church services and Sunday school for several years.

She also was a member of the Osawatomie Chapter No. 26, Order of the Eastern Star and was a former district aide. She was a past president of the Monday Club and Music Club of Osawatomie.

Her parents, two brothers, Fred and George, and her sister, Hazel, also preceded her in death.

The survivors include her foster son, Fred A. Stewart of Phoenix, Ariz.; four nephews; and her guardian and niece by marriage, Virginia Fleming of Paola.

Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Bronson Cemetery at Bronson, Kan. The Rev. Lee Wiersma officated. Services were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Olathe Medical Center.
