Josephine Day, 97, Wayne, Neb., a former Osawatomie resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Wayne, Neb.

She was born Oct. 8, 1900, at Charleston, Ill., the daughter of William and Nellie Nees Berry. She was educated in the Charleston public school, the Horace Mann School in New York City, and completed school at Osawatomie High School graduating with the class of 1919.

She was married Nor. 17, 1923, to Lewis Albert "Ab" Day in Kansas City, Mo. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of a son.

They moved in October 1985 to Wayne to be near their son. Mr. Day died in 1990.

Jo, as she was known, was active in the First United Methodist Church in Osawatomie, where she directed the church choir for more than 10 years. She received her musical training at the Horace Mann School, Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and the Horner Institute of Music in Kansas City, Mo.

In the early 1990s, she transferred her Methodist church membership to the First United Methodist Church of Wayne, where she continued her active membership with the United Methodist Women. She was also very active in the Wayne Senior Citizens Center.

Others preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Marie.

Surviving are her son, James Day of Wayne and a grandson, Scott Day of Omaha, Neb.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church in Osawatomie. The Rev. Ted Hunter and the Rev. Lee Wiersma officiated. Music was provided by Rosalie Bowker, organist, and Connie Webber, soloist. The songs were "Nearer My God to Thee," "Eternal Life," "You Are a Wonderful Mother," "A Perfect Day" and "On Eagles' Wings."

Burial was in the Elmdale Cemetery at Osawatomie. Pallbearers were Bert Binkley, Doug Tyrrell, Bill Calvin, Ernest Swenson, Merle Stone and Ernest Jones. Arrangements were by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.

Memorials may be made to the church of Osawatomie or Wayne or to the Wayne Senior Center.
