DECEMBER 29, 1899 - NOVEMBER 20, 1970

Mrs. Doris Leah Born, 70, of Atchison died in the Atchison hospital November 20, 1970. Stricken at her home from a heart ailment that afternoon, she entered the hospital at that time and her death occurred a few hours later.

Funeral services were held at an Atchison funeral chapel Sunday afternoon. Burial, under direction of Birchard's of Osawatomie, was in the Osawatomie cemetery following graveside services at 4 o'clock that afternoon. Rev. A. Wylie Lathan officiated.

Mrs. Born was born at Osawatomie December 29, 1899, daughter of Louis Vernon and Christine Cooper Mattingly. She was graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1918 and studied at Bethany college, Kansas State College, Pittsburg, and the State Teachers College at Emporia. She taught in the Eureka schools and in 1934 became active in social work. For four years she was employed in the Miami County Welfare Department and was director of county welfare in Barber county for 22 years before selling her home in Medicine Lodge in 1964 and moving to Atchison, closing a 30 year career in welfare work.

She was married to Bert H. Born at Osawatomie May 24, 1923. A basketball coach, Mr. Born died at the age of 29. Surviving are their two children, a son, B. H. Born, now living in Peoria, Ill., who was a basketball star at the University of Kansas in the early 1950s, and a daughter, Jean, wife of Dr. C. H. Young of Atchison.

Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. George W. Krumsick, Kansas City; Mrs. Gideon Brandt, Augusta, and Carolyn Mattingly, Osawatomie; two brothers, William Mattingly, Osawatomie, and Donald Mattingly, LeRoy, and four grandchildren. Besides her husband, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
