Last rites for Lula Ellen Riggs, 521 Fourth St., Osawatomie, were held Tuesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

Mrs. Riggs died unexpectedly at her home Sunday, Jan 31, 1988. She was 88.

The daughter of Charles Perry and Florence Proffitt Durrant, she was born March 27, 1899, in Tyrone, Mo. The family moved to a farm near Osawatomie in 1902. She attended local schools and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1918. She worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad for 17 years.

On Jan. 12, 1930, she and Lt. Col. Orville H. Riggs were married. He died March 7, 1952.

Mrs. Riggs was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Osawatomie and had served as a trustee and as treasurer for 12 years. She was also a member of the United Presbyterian Women; a 50-year member of Osawatomie Chapter No. 26, Order of Eastern Star; and Chapter DO of the P.E.O. Sisterhood of Osawatomie.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob Durrant, Clifford Durrant, Roy Durrant and Alford Durrant, and two sisters, Edna Russell and Pansy Moore.

Survivors include a sister, Zelphia Lofv, and a brother Auburn Durrant, both of Osawatomie.

The Rev. Ralph Adamson officiated. Music was provided by Dean Diediker, soloist, and Nelle Dollar, organist.

Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joseph Whiteford, Fred Wicke, Merle Ensle, Bethel Perry, Roy Carpenter and Everett Whitney. Honorary pallbearers were Douglas Hagadorn and William W. Eddy.

A memorial has been established in her name to the church.
