Carolyn C. Mattingly, a teacher and head of the commerce department in the Osawatomie school system for 29 years, died July 5, 1976 at Holiday Manor at the age of 79. She retired in May 1965.

She was an educator by profession and served as superintendent of rural schools of Miami County from 1931 to 1935, elected on the Democratic ticket, and for 29 years taught in the Osawatomie school system, as head of the commerce department. She also taught in Medicine Lodge and in Kinsley and Cimarron.

The daughter of Louis V. and Christine Cooper Mattingly, she was born April 9, 1897 in Osawatomie. She attended schools in Osawatomie and was graduated from Osawatomie High School with the class of 1916.

She was a graduate of Pittsburg State College and the former Huff's Business College, Kansas City, where she received the Gregg Shorthand Award as top achievement in her field. Upon receiving her masters degree she was elected to membership in Kappa Delta Pi, national honorary society.

Miss Mattingly was a member of the United Metodist Church and Order of Eastern Star.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Edison and two sisters, Helen and Doris.

Survivors include two sisters, Corinne Krumsick, Shawnee Mission, and Gideon Brandt, Augusta; and two brothers, William Mattingly, Osawatomie, and Don Mattingly, LeRoy.

Services were held Thursday in Birchard Funeral Home with the Rev. Clayton Pittman officiating. Organ selections were provided by Mrs. John Dollar.

Pallbearers were Gary Burgoon, Charles Heckart, Ernest Swenson, John Shaw, Larkin Bussell and Rolllie Pierce.

Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery. A memorial to the Osawatomie library has been established.
