ELLA HORTON SHAWVER

CLASS OF 1913

DECEMBER 13, 1895 - APRIL 5, 1991

Ella Shawver, 95, well-known and longtime resident of Paola, died Friday, April 5, 1991, at the Pinecrest Haven Nursing Center, where she made her home.

She was born in Admire, Kan., on Dec. 13, 1895, the daughter of Charles and Mary Jane Walton Horton. The family moved to Lindsborg when she was an infant and when she was in her early teens they moved to Osawatomie. She graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1913.

She was married to Karl V. Shawver of Osawatomie on Feb. 5, 1916 at Osawatomie. They lived there for a short time following their marriage. Her husband, who was an attorney, was appointed Miami County Attorney and the couple moved to Paola to make their home.

Her husband, Karl V. Shawver, Sr. died in 1962.

Mrs. Shawver was a 70-year member of the First Unitd Presbyterian Church of Paola, having jointed the church on March 25, 1921. She was a member of many years of the former Garden Club. She like to raise flowers.

After her husband's death she visited her sister who was an artist. Mrs. Shawver began painting when she was in her mid-60s. She also liked to sew and do fancy work. She was a volunteer at the Miami County Hospital for many years.

Others perceding her in death were her parents and five brothers and sisters.

Surviving are a son, Karl V. Shawver, Jr. of Paola; a daughter, Betty Reitz of Mission; a brother, Avery Horton of York, Pa.; a sister, Gladys Harris of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson and Son Chapel in Paola. The services were at 10 a.m. today, Monday at the Chapel. The Rev. Tom Sparks, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church officiated. Organ selections were provided by Virginia Karr.

The burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery. Serving as the pallbearrs were grandsons, Steve Shawver and Joseph Reitz; great-grandsons, Chris Reitz and David Reitz, her son-in-law, Harry Reitz; and a nephew, Frank Shawver.

Memorials have been established in her name to the church.
