Mrs. Florence Edith Estes, 85, formerly of Osawatomie, died Sunday March 22, 1981, at Country Haven, Inc. in Paola. She was born Aug. 28, 1895, in Miami County near Osawatomie, the daughter of Jessie and Stella McCullough Chambers.

She graduated from Osawatomie High School with the class of 1913. In 1919 she was married in Osawatomie to Melvin G. Estes. They became the parents of four children. They were divorced.

Mrs. Estes worked as a clerk at the Fair Store and Coker's Store in Osawatomie. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the WMB Class, the Osawatomie Chapter No. 26 Order of the Eastern Star, the Service Mothers Club and the American Legion Auxiliary of Osawatomie.

Her parents, a son George Estes who died Dec. 24, 1980, a brother John L. Chambers, and two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Bedell and a baby sister Katherine, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Maxine Strouf of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Eileen Hood of Topeka; a son Charles Douglas Estes of Overland Park; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church at Osawatomie. The Rev. Gene Riley and the Rev. Clayton Pittman officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Jo Dickey and Mrs. Dorothy Heckart, accompanied by Mrs. Ida Phares.

Pallbearers were Larry Coker, Cloman Weaver, Harold Cartwright, Roy Brassfield, Glenn Ricketts and Raymond Barnett. Burial was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery under the direction of the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.
